According to a report from LG using ASIC data, more than 650 solar installation companies have closed since 2011. The report suggests there are more than 300,000 “orphaned” solar systems in Australia. Other reports say it could be as many as 30% of all systems installed! If you own an orphaned system you can’t contact the original installer and, in most cases, the brands used are no longer manufactured or supported.
The reason many of these operators fail is because they try and use the STC rebates to cover the cost of the components of the system. As such, the systems installed by these ‘cowboys’ tend to use low grade products.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that a high percentage of solar installers file for bankruptcy when they are faced with myriad of warranty claims for isolators, inverters or panels. Suppliers of lower grade products have been known to dishonour warranty claims and, regardless of any warranty, the installer must pay for the ‘time and labour’ to fix the problem.
Added to this, low cost solar businesses use sub-contractors to install the system which compounds the problem. They pay ‘subbies’ so poorly that they can’t possibly spend the time needed to complete the installation properly and they invariably cut corners to ensure they can get through enough jobs to make a living. The work is seldom checked and sometimes the systems have never operated correctly from day one!
At HV Solar we only use the very best quality panels and inverters so our systems perform year after year. We can count the number of warranty claims on one hand! We never use subcontractors so we are confident about the quality of our systems.
With HV Solar you will never have an orphaned system because we are here for the long haul and our reputation for good work is well known. The number of customers who keep recommending us to their family and friends is quite amazing and we are very grateful for each and every one of our customers who have supported us over the years.
If you are sourcing quotes for a solar system please remember that when you are comparing apples with apples, the location and reputation of the installer should be factored in. Otherwise you could end up with a lemon!
